SPECIFIC TESTS AND MARKERS (Not all cancers produce these markers)

CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen)    elevated in cancers of the colon,  rectum,  lung,  breast,  and
                                                             pancreas
CA-125                                                elevated in cancers of the ovary and uterus
CA 19-9                                               elevated in cancers of the colon,  pancreas,  stomach and liver
CA 15-3                                               elevated in breast cancer
Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)                   elevated in primary liver cancer and some cancers of the testis
HCG (human chorionic                    elevated in some cancers of the testis and ovary and some lung
  gonadotropin)                                   cancers also elevated in pregnancy
Prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP)    markedly elevated in some cases of prostate cancer
Serum protein electrophoresis        helpful in diagnosing prostate cancer,  in detecting recurrent disease
                                                             and in guiding treatment
Serum protein                                    adnormal gamma globulin (monoclonal "spike") is found in
                                                             multiple myeloma
immunoeletrophoresis                     globulin present
  (IgG,  IgA,  IgM)
